6 Things to Know Before Your First Boxing Class

Boxing gyms are popping up all over South Florida in an effort to help people get in shape while learning some boxing techniques. Recently it was all about spin classes, and then came CrossFit, but now it is time to tighten your wraps, lace up your gloves, and hit the ring. These are a few things you need to know before taking your first boxing class at Delray Beach Boxing Club.

Don’t Worry, You Won’t Get Punched

Many people have the common misconception that boxing means you will be sparring with someone. This is a one on one training where each person practices their punches, blocks, and technique in a practice fight. However, you will not be doing this on your first day.

Depending on which class you are taking, you will be learning the fundamentals and basics of throwing a punch, the different types of punches, as well as footwork. We recommend our new members try out our boxing fitness or cardio boxing classes as a slow, but intense introduction to boxing. These classes focus on a full-body burn while learning the basics of the sport.

Once you continue taking classes and perfecting your technique, you will then be slowly introduced into sparring. Until then, we want to help you achieve your fitness goals while teaching you about the sport we love.

Come Early and Be Ready to Sweat

For your first boxing class, you will want to come early to meet your trainers and have a look around the facility. At Delray Beach Boxing Club, we offer facility tours over the weekends, however, if you missed out we will give you a quick tour your first day. We also want to give you time to come in and grab some gear if you do not have your own.

We know how intimidating it can be walking into your first class, and we were all once in your shoes. But, our fun and energetic trainers are all here to help you with whatever you need. We want to see you succeed while having a good time. We may push you, and you will most likely be sweating by the end, but we want to see each member hit their fitness goals.

No Experience Necessary

Delray Beach Boxing Club is open to all experience levels. We have plenty of members who are looking for a new way to get in shape, while others are training for their boxing matches. The great thing about our gym is that anyone can do it.

We offer classes like technical boxing for those members who want to learn more about the technique of boxing. Our trainers go at the pace of each member so you don’t have to feel like you are getting left behind. We also offer one on one training sessions if you want a little extra help throwing that perfect jab.

Bring Your Gear if You Have it

For each and every boxing class we offer at Delray Beach Boxing club, we suggest our members bring any gear they already own. However, if you don’t have any we have you covered.  We offer all the necessary boxing equipment needed to train. If you have gear or plan on purchasing some you will want to get hand wraps. These wraps help to protect your wrists and knuckles. You will also need boxing gloves which you will be using when hitting bags and doing mitt work with a trainer.

If you are unsure what to wear to your first boxing class we recommend fitted sports attire. This can be workout shorts, leggings, t-shirts, tank tops, or anything you feel comfortable moving in and of course sweating. It is important to remember your tennis shoes or any sneaker because we require shoes on for every class.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Before, during, and after, it is so important to keep your body hydrated. You will be pushing your body and muscles to the limit, so we want you to continue refueling and re-hydrating. If you haven’t worked out in a while, your body may not be used to sweating the way it will be in class. We recommend our members drink 7-10 ounces of fluid every 10-20 minutes. Listen to your body and if you need a quick water break, feel free to step to the side and refuel. We also have water fountains equipped with water bottle refill stations to easily refill any bottle.

Get Ready to be Hooked

We aren’t talking about the punch, we just know after your first class with us at Delray Beach Boxing Club you will be hooked. Our goal is to deliver results and have you wanting more the second you walk out the door. Every trainer is passionate about the sport of boxing and sharing that passion with each member. We are here to push you and help you reach your fitness goals. We strive to keep our gym fun and exciting, so we blast music and get our members pumped up.
